"There's no cover, and cocktails are available for purchase at popular prices."

From Mike C's "Hoboken Rock City":

"One of the few bars left in Alphabet City with its punk rock reputation still intact, Manitoba's is like an actual Hard Rock Cafe minus the sterile tourists, the hapless tourists, and the crappy food. The bar is a cozy, no-frills space on Avenue B, its walls lined with an impressive collection of classic punk photography.

The place bears the imprimatur of proprietor Handsome Dick Manitoba. The voice of the legendary Dictators--the '70s punk pioneers who influenced generations of New York bands from The Ramones to The Beastie Boys--Handsome Dick can also be heard weeknights from 8 p.m. to midnight on Little Steven's Underground Garage channel on Sirius satellite radio.

Join me Wednesday, February 1 as I play some of my favorite punk rock, garage, glam, indie, '60s, '70s, and '80s tunes in this classic setting. Spread the word and bring friends. There's no cover, and cocktails are available for purchase at popular prices."

Paul Nicholas - "Heaven On The Seventh Floor"

For as long as I've been aware of the wonderous invention of the mp3, I've been searching for a copy of one of my favorite pop radio hits of all time, "Heaven On The Seventh Floor", by Paul Nicholas. The song was released in 1977, and got as high as #6 in the Billboard Top-40 charts. Loaded with handclaps, cowbell, and "Woo-hoo"'s, the song is 2 minutes and 48 seconds of disco-pop bliss. Sadly, the song's not currently available on iTunes, or any other download service for that matter.

I finally found it this week on a used CD copy of No. 1 Radio Hits Of The 70's that only cost me a buck...and the disc included a few other gems including tracks from Rod Stewart, B.T.O, Lou Rawls, and even Sammy Davis, Jr.'s "Candy Man". Nice.

Since I'm sure there's got to be at least one other knucklehead like myself who's been searching the Internets for this slice of Seventies Pop Goodness, I'm gonna post a download of it here for a few weeks. I'm also posting a classic piece of grade-school slow-dance schmaltz that was also included on this album, disco diva Teri DeSario's duet with the Behind The Music-worthy K.C. (sans Sunshine Band), "Yes I'm Ready".

Hit Hard-Fi's Cash Machine For Free This Week.

The second best thing to come out of Staines (after Ali G.) lately is Hard-Fi. I saw them at that XFM shindig in Brixton last month, and thought they came off a little like an indie-boyband, but their songs are definately solid.

Hard-Fi, XFM Winter Wonderland, December 2005

This week's free download at iTunes is Hard-Fi's "Cash Machine"...click here to get it.

This is what Hard-Fi saw at that show:

album review: RICHARD BUTLER "Richard Butler"

Richard Butler – “Richard Butler” (Koch)

In this age of seemingly thousands of crappy “punk” bands with singers who all sound exactly the same, there are precious few vocalists of any rock genre who are instantly recognizable. Fewer still are those singers who can be counted on to not foist junk on the music-buying public. Falling squarely in both categories is Richard Butler.

With a career spanning seven studio albums with the Psychedelic Furs and another pair with Love Spit Love, Butler’s amassed a formidable portfolio of quality music that always seemed one step ahead of trend. Remarkably, twenty-six years after the release of the first Furs album, his new self-titled solo album proves that he’s still ahead of the curve.

Lyrically, this album is chock full of the unique observational and philosophical imagery that we’ve come to expect from Butler, but musically the record is an interesting departure for him. His collaborator, Jon Carin, best known for working with Bryan Ferry, Pink Floyd, and The Who among many others, creates a dreamy and mysterious soundscape for Butler to nestle his poetry into. The lyrics on this record seem to be less angry and more introspective and personal than the usual Butler fare, and when coupled with the swirling shimmer of Carin’s guitars and keys, create an album both compelling and enjoyable all the way through.

After the onslaught last year of sad reunions and reappearances by rockers with nothing new or interesting to contribute to the state of modern music, it’s both refreshing and encouraging to see there’s at least one guy out there not afraid to put his past a bit behind him and rise to the challenge of producing something new and different.

Butler’s got a tour scheduled…tickets for most dates are already onsale:

Work For It has an MP3 download here of the best mashup of the year so far:

There's also a great live download of "Dance Floor" from The Astoria there as well.

I know this blog has been pretty Monkeys-centric lately, but that album is the best bunch of songs I've heard in a while....

Your Last Chance To See Matisyahu Before He Plays Radio City and The Garden...

Just got this email from the remnants of what was once K-Rock in NYC:

K-ROCK2 welcomes
Matisyahu
with Balkan Beat Box

Tuesday, March 7 at Hammerstein Ballroom

INTERNET PRESALE
Wed, Jan. 18, 9AM - Thurs, Jan. 19, 9PM
password: CROWN (non case sensitive)

Onsale to General Public:
Fri, Jan. 20, 11AM
CLICK HERE on Wednesday at 9AM to purchase tickets.

By total chance the other night, I got to spend some time with the parents of Matisyahu's drummer, the rock steady Jonah David. They were such nice and cool people that I'd go to this show just in hopes of bumping into them again.

Matisyahu opened for the terribly milquetoast O.A.R. at MSG this past Saturday night, and not surprisingly, there was quite an exodus for the doors after his set. I have a feeling it's not long before he's headlining his own show there.

In other Matisyahu news...I've mentioned here before how it's better for everyone when you can buy records directly from bands at shows or straight from the indie label, cutting out middlemen and putting dough into artists hands quicker, but sometimes there are even better perks like this one:

If you pre-order Matisyahu's forthcoming album Youth direct from his label J-Dub here, you'll get the full-length Youth Dub album free.

Some Great Links-ah, about The Fall-ah!

While listening to the excellent new album from The Fall, "Fall Heads Roll", I thought I'd post up a couple links to some great media involving rock's most lovable curmudgeon, Mark E Smith.

Dave Simpson from The Guardian gave himself the daunting task of tracking down every ex-member of The Fall. By his count, that's over 40 people! Here are his results, along with comments from many of those band members who were sacked, most of which are very charitable toward Fall-leader and personnel director Mark E Smith.

A compelling and hilarious compendium of "amusing between-song banter", rants, and nonsense including on track entiltled "Mark E Smith Battling With Bandmates At Brownies in NYC" can be found at the WFMU's Beware Of The Blog.

The good folks at WFMU also provide us with video clips of Smith reading the football scores on BBC Score last November, and commenting on-air about the passing of John Peel.

The official Fall website is here.

The Mooney Suzuki Shows At Sin-e Are NOT Mooney Suzuki Shows, Say The Mooney Suzuki.

Just got this note from The Mooney Suzuki regarding the Sin-e shows:

Just to make things clear ahead of time so nobody feels ripped-off - this is NOT a Mooney Suzuki "secret show".

"The Patchwork Family" is not the band proper but Sammy and Graham and friends having a regular ol' hootenany... Expect something a bit different than the Mooney Suzuki.

Hmmm. The TicketWeb tickets say "Mooney Suzuki". Whatever. I can't imagine this'll be anything but a great rock show.

Morningwood At The Bowery For Free.

From the Village Voice Promo Newsletter:

Beginning Jan. 10, get a free ticket to see Morningwood at Bowery Ballroom on Jan. 11 with purchase of their self-titled new release (while supplies last) at Tower in the Village:

Tower Records
692 Broadway @ 4th
New York, NY 10012 (212) 505-1500

Considering the fact that the Morningwood album is being released at an introductory "nice price", I'm pretty sure this means you can get the disc and a concert ticket for less than ten bucks, tax included.

Such a deal!

Is It Me, Or Has Manhattan, South Of 4th Street, Turned Into A Giant TV Production Lot?

I was knocking around downtown today, and couldn't help but notice how many film crews were working and how many more streets were scheduled to be closed in the next few days for more production.

I'm used to seeing one or two crews during the course of a day, but it seems to be getting ridiculous now. Signs were posted on Bleeker from Lafayette to Bowery that "Love Monkey" will own that area all weekend, and on various streets from Houston to Canal I saw signs plotting upcoming "No Parking" production areas like the one above for two NBC Televison projects, two movies whose production names I didn't recognize, one NHK Japan project, and of course the production that never ends, "Law And Order".

At least these are more opportunities for me to play "See If Anybody Stops Me At The Craft Services Table". I usually give myself 1 point for a piece of fruit or a candy bar, 5 points for a coffee or hot chocolate, and 10 points for a sandwich. I award myself a "win" if I get all three and a "heyhowareya" from anyone with a laminated credential.

No points today, but only because I was in a rush. But don't be surprised if you see me in a tug-of-war over a turkey and mozzarella panini with Jason Priestley in Page Six on Monday morning.

Richard Butler, Solo Fur.

Psychedelic Furs front-man Richard Butler has a self-titled solo album coming out on 21 March on Koch, and also has a solo tour lined-up as follows:

03/20/06: Chicago, Illinois / Abbey Pub
03/21/06: Cleveland, Ohio / Beachland Ballroom
03/24/06: Hoboken, New Jersey / Maxwell's
03/25/06: New York, New York / Canal Room
03/26/06: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania / World Cafe
03/31/06: Seattle, Washington / Crocodile Cafe
04/03/06: San Francisco, California / Slim's
04/04/06: Las Vegas, Nevada / House of Blues
04/06/06: Los Angeles, California / Key Club
04/07/06: San Juan Capistrano, California / Coach House
04/08/06: Solana Beach, California / Belly Up Tavern

Tickets for the Maxwell's gig are already on sale, and the Canal Room gig goes on sale 12 January.

Hear two tracks from the album at Richard's MySpace page.

Last time he stepped away from The Furs, his band Love Spit Love put out a pair of excellent, but less-than-chartbusting albums. One of the singles from that project, their cover of The Smiths' classic "How Soon Is Now" can be heard a couple times a day as the theme to the now syndicated TV show "Charmed".

DFA + Britney Spears = Crazy Delicious

Allegedly, DFA's James Murphy & Tim Goldsworthy worked on this demo with Britney, but it was rejected by Brit's label, Jive, for being "too hip"...which compared to her other recent output is true.

rapidshare MP3 here.

The track is, not surprisingly, very LCD Soundsystem, and the vocal track is obviously a demo scratch...but overall, I think it's pretty great.

Maybe it's not too late for them to save K-Fed's trainwreck of an album that's due out soon.

Mooney Suzuki "Secret" NYC Show On Sale Now

The first of the Mooney Suzuki "secret" NYC shows at tiny Sin-e (next Tuesday, 10 January) has gone onsale at Ticketweb. The second show, which is the following Tuesday (17 January) allegedly will go on sale shortly. The Mighty MS are playing under the assumed name of "The Patchwork Family"...(Thanks Brooklyn Vegan and Product Shop NYC).

My buddies and I have tickets for that first night and I couldn't be more psyched. I watched how powerful they were at Maxwell's in Hoboken on one of their "Alive & Amplified" dates last tour...I think Sin-e's room is even smaller than Maxwell's, so I'll be sure to keep my wig fastened at that show.
