Radio 4 & Young Love @ Crash Mansion For Cheap

KROCK2 is presenting Radio 4 and Young Love at Crash Mansion on 8 August for a mere $9.23. Normally, that wacky price would make sense for a radio promotion gig, since it obviously jives with the station frequency. But since there's no way in hell (unless there's some show I don't know about on "92 Free" or whatever the station is called now) their actual "over-the-air" station plays Radio 4, it's kind of stoopid..dontcha think? As a matter of fact, their website is actually touting the fact that they are playing the new Bob Seger single!

Whatever...if they want to subsidize decent shows, I'm cool with it.

By now, I'm sure you know that a Radio 4 show guarantees your hips to move, no matter how much of a cross-armed hipster statue you usually are at shows.

Launch Radio 4 player here.

Young Love are a Stolen Transmission band, which means they (actually he...a guy called Dan Keyes, but he's got a live band) rock and groove in equal parts.

Young Love - "Discotech" real windows

Bigstereo has a great remix download of Young Love's "Discotech" here.

Opening the night is Brooklyn's R.U.O.K., who describe themselves as such:
"R.U.O.K's sound is an array of moody and melodic to raw, energetic rock using influences ranging from 80's post punk/New Wave to 90's Indie/Alternative all the while shaping it in to an original and unique modern style."

Yikes. Listen below to hear that they actually sound much better than they write blurbs:

Monsters Are Waiting @ Pianos, 20 July 06

from extrawack! guest reviewer Unkle Munki:

Monsters Are Waiting played the second of two shows last night at Pianos in NYC, opening with the hypnotic "Firefly" and playing seven more selections from their recently released debut cd Fascination.

Singer Annalee Fery captivates immediately with siren vocals that could surely lure hipsters to their deaths; and combined with the solid riffs and hooks of Jonathan Siebels (guitar/bass) and Andrew Clark (bass/guitar), and the solid drumming of Eric Gardner, you have a band that sounds like it is definitely going nowhere but up.

Pianos was packed for this show and the crowd quickly swelled in number and enthusiasm during the opening sets by The Bon Savants and The Shorebirds. MAW took the stage around midnight and by that time there was very little room to move. I don't know how Wednesday's show was but I imagine from the response and reaction on Thursday it was just as packed.

The 40 minute set included all of my favorites that I have been listening to recently: Ha Ha, Fascination, Don't Go, Nobody and a full tilt version of Christine that closed the show. Honestly there wasn't a bad song in the set. This is a band that I would expect to hear a lot more about soon and I am looking forward to that time when I can talk about how I was lucky enough to see them up close and early on at Pianos.

Set List:

Firefly
Ha Ha
Fascination
Don't Go
Last Goodbye
Adored
Nobody
Christine

album reviews: Ocote Soul Sounds, Paul Weller (Live!), The Punch Line, White Whale

Here are some of the albums that are making my Summer the groove-fest that it is so far:

Ocote Soul Sounds and Adrian Quesada - El Nino Y El Sol

Brooklyn meets Austin in this collaboration between Martin Perna of Antibalas and Adrian Quesada of Grupo Fantasma. A beautiful hybrid of Afrobeat and Latin Funk, this faux movie soundtrack is tailor-made for hanging in the backyard, the park, or a rooftop with chilly beers and few plans.

Steamy, hazy, chilled, and trippin'...this disc will turn a low-key hang into an event instantly.

Ocote Soul Sounds - "Dedication TV" mp3 buy

Paul Weller - Catch-Flame!

You can count on one hand the number of musical artists from the early Eighties who are still making relevant and interesting music today...and one of those people is Paul Weller. Though The Jam and The Style Council are mainly what Weller's known for here, unfortunately his solo works have not made the kind of commercial impact in the States as they have in the UK. In fact, Weller was awarded the "Outstanding Contribution To Music Award" at this years Brits.

This two-CD set (recorded at Alexandra Palace in London this past December) is a fantastic live representation of Weller's fine solo work, and also includes three Jam songs and a pair of Style Council singles as well. I'm not a big fan of live albums, but not only does this one sound great, but somehow seems perfectly appropriate for this stage in Weller's long career.

Two-hours of rock & soul from an originator, not a perpetrator.

The Punch Line - ...To Get To The Other Side
Speaking of the Modfather, New Jersey's The Punch Line obviously has a few copies of some Weller work amongst its bandmembers. Splitting the difference between The Jam and The Undertones (with some Damned influence for good measure), these guys craft rockin' poptunes with all the right moves...a little fuzz here, some buzz there, and just the right touch of jangle throughout.

These guys are a bit older than the baby-faced "punks" that you can't seem to avoid these days, and the experience shows in the music. Apparently, they have some live dates forthcoming, including a gig at the International Pop Overthrow fest in NYC this November. There's nothing better than a good power-trio live, in my book. Gonna have to check them out.

White Whale - WWI

One of those records with so many influences and points of view, but every one a good one. Also one of those albums that are really interesting all the way through. Soaring and swirly guitars, pounding pianos, and totally catchy beats and melodies make this disc stand way above all the other "everything but the kitchen sink" bands that seem to be catch all the buzz (every band from Montreal in the last nine months...I'm looking at you!).

The label's hype sheet makes references to bands from Big Star and Black Sabbath to Badfinger and Okkervil River, but I'm thinking World Party meets Rob Dickenson at The Ocean Blue's pad with David Bowie hanging on the couch. Yeah, that's exactly what they sound like.

Monsters Are Waiting Twice At Pianos This Week

For months, friends of mine in L.A. have been telling me about Monsters Are Waiting, and how they've been tearing up Spaceland out there.

To me they sound a lot like Elastica's better days, but singer Annalee sounds a lot more like Altered Images' Claire Grogan, or Wendy James of Transvision Vamp and Racine.

Their album Fascination is out tomorrow, and they hit NYC for two shows at Pianos this Wednesday and Thursday.

Tour dates:

Heat + Rain + White Belted Hipsters + Fun = Siren.

Thanks to Murf, Jim, and Yusuke for covering me here this week!

I hit Siren for a short while early in the day yesterday since I'd seen most of the headlining bands before...hot, muggy, rainy for a bit...but still fun as usual.

I really enjoyed Dirty On Purpose, and having only seen them in smaller clubs previously, thought they sounded pretty good on the big stage and out in the open.

Here they are, or were, I guess:

and here's another reason why New York Noise is great...their banners make swell rain shields:

The "Brooklyn" of the Old North Woods

One last post from me, Murf of False 45th, before I'm out of here.

I thought I'd share some good indie bands from the Burlington (VT) area with you NYC music lovers. So, here's a quick rundown of the indie bands that are pushing their way through the choking sea of jam bands in VT.

The Jazz Guys

The Jazz Guys are the most popular band going in Burlington scene these days. Their name is a misnomer since their sound is as close to jazz as Charlie Parker is to reggae. TJG are more pop punk with a blistering two guitar assault that is softened by their four-part harmonies and sharp hooks.

They just released their debut EP, Blessing in Disguise, which is available only at their shows and select Burlington record shops but they are working on an online option. Once they have an online sales option figured out (hey things work a little differently in VT; cut us some slack), I'll ask b.f. to post the info.

For anyone in the Burlington area, The Jazz Guys will be at Red Square this Friday night and then at Higher Ground the following Friday (7/21) with Phantom Buffalo and Danielson.

The Hero Cycle

Do you like Broken Social Scene? If so, you'll like The Hero Cycle. They're a new seven piece band creating that multi-layered textured sound that BSS has become famous for. They haven't released any albums yet but have a few songs available for downloads on their myspace page.

The Hero Cycle will be playing at Sin-e in NYC this Friday night. They are coming on at 8pm which will leave you with enough time to get over to Maxwells for that Serena Mannesh show at 10pm. Their current tour will take them down the east coast and through the midwest (including Indianapolis, Jim). Dates here.

To download these tracks, left click on them and then save them to your disk.

The Hero Cycle - "Breathing In" mp3 site [recommended]
The Hero Cycle - "You vs Them" mp3 site
The Hero Cycle - "American Proxy" mp3 site

The New Siberians

These guys are the newest guys on the block. I haven't seen The New Siberians live yet but their song "1965" has been spinning in my iPod a lot of the last month. Nothing fancy. Just a fuzzy but melodic guitar attack from this trio with a catchy chorus line.

They haven't released anything yet but they have a few demos out there. There are songs available from them on their website and myspace page.

The New Siberians - "1965" mp3 site

Kris Gruen

The son of famed NYC rock photographer, Bob Gruen, Kris has been living in central VT since attending Goddard College some years back. This spring he released his debut album, Lullaby School on NYC's Mother West label.

Kris Gruen's songs are more mellow than the bands listed above. More along the lines of Iron & Wine or Sufjan Stevens. Quiet but with a multi-instrumental blended sound.

Kris occasionally plays at Joe's Pub as he did last month. But as of right now, I don't know when he'll be playing down there again.

From hippies to hayseeds...

Greetings, extrawack! readers. This is Jim from the late blog 11 a.m. Air Raid taking the baton from Murf. While Murf came to you from the land where hippies go to their final resting place, I come to you from the capital of fly-over country, Indianapolis. Yes, I'm from the state that is home to gun-toting/Bible-thumping Congressmen, fornicating deer masquerading as art, a festival devoted to everyone's favorite Eastern European pastry, cars that like ovals, lots of people with a jam band fetish (wait, Murf, isn't that supposed to be Vermont?), and, yes, lots and lots of corn and soybeans.

Enough on Indiana. Here are a few things that are happening out your way:

On July 25, the New York Dolls (or what's left of them anyway) will release their first album in over thirty years, One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This. David Johansen, Syl Sylvain, and the rest of the band will do an in-store show on the release date of the new album at the Tower Records store on 4th and Broadway. For more information on the show, you can go to the band's page on the website of their label, Roadrunner.

Still having a bit of a World Cup hangover? Are the Red Bulls a woefully insufficient means of getting your soccer fix? If so, then head to the cinema and see Once in a Lifetime: The Extraordinary Story of the New York Cosmos. I trust that I don't have to tell you the topic of this fine documentary. So relive the legendary stories from the summer of '77. See Pele work his magic. See Giorgio Chinaglia be a supreme dick. And see Shep Messing go to Studio 54 to get his hands on as much tail and champagne as he can find.

View the trailer for Once in a Lifetime here.

Finally, while Murf thinks that Zidane only wanted candy, I think that his explosive temper just got the best of him. Burn, Marco, Burn!

Tapes n' Tapes Back On Sale For Hoboken Show

Tickets for the previously "sold-out" Tapes n' Tapes show at Maxwell's in Hoboken this Sunday are back onsale at Ticketweb.

Thanks to Murf for covering for me here while I'm traveling...look for more from him and others through the week.

Who Wants to Be On The New Year's Guest List at North Six?

Murf from False 45th again.

Tired of paying for shows? Looking for a comp? Got more time than money on your hands? Love those Kadane brothers?

Well, everyone's favorite slowcore giants, The New Year (featuring Matt & Bubba Kadane of Bedhead fame), are offering to put you on their guest list for their Saturday, August 12th show at North Six.

Here's the deal...you contact them...they'll send you posters for the show...you put the posters up around town...you're on the guest list.

Pretty damn easy, eh? That's about an hour or two of work. And for it, you get to see a rare show from one the best builders of tension, guitar hooks and walls of sound...for free. For more details, read here.

For those readers in Boston, the deal works for you too. The New Year will be playing upstairs at The Middle East on Friday, August 11th.

By the way, Touch & Go labelmate Nina Nastasia will be opening both shows for The New Year.

Dream Pop Friday

Still Murf from False 45th here.

So, after absorbing the folky essence of Thursday night's shows, why not speedball your musical intake and head back to Maxwells on Friday night for some Norwegian dream pop. Serena Maneesh will be pulling into Hoboken in time for a late show (10pm) with Tigercity (following the early comedy show).

Serena Maneesh is still out supporting their 2005 killer self-titled debut LP. The following day, they'll be playing the Siren Festival in Coney Island with Art Brut, Tapes 'N Tapes and other notables. However, given the choice though, I think their swirling sonic sound would work better late at night inside a club than out in the sunshine by the beach.

Geez, I hope you New Yorkers appreciate the plethora of great shows availble to you. It's amazing.

Thursday Night Double Feature

Hey Folks, This is Murf from False 45th up in the Green Mountains taking the controls of your extrawack experience for the night while b.f. is off investigating the recent spate of poor behavior from Jerry Collins and Zindane.

How's your Thursday night looking? No plans? Afraid of all the patchouli oil soaked hippies descending on midtown for the Bob Weir shows at Radio City? Trust me. I live in Hippieville, USA. You should be afraid.

Well, here's how to avoid the roving bands of dredlocks and ill-fitting clothes. Okkervil River is playing at Castle Clinton down in Battery Park at 7pm (free tickets will be distributed in pairs at 5pm). They should be done around 9pm which should give you time to get a PATH train out to Hoboken to see Fruit Bats at Maxwells when they hit the stage around 10pm.

There you go. Two fine bands and it'll keep you well south and west of the geriatric free spirits.

Now, I know how tough it is to get you jaded NYC hipsters off your asses. So, here's the bonus for the night. Noted Vermont author and editor Rowan Jacobsen is going to be hitting both of these shows. If you spot him at both shows and ask him about the surprising health benefits of chocolate, he'll give you an autographed copy of his best-selling book Chocolate Unwrapped.

New Early Day Miners Album Soon, MP3 Now.

Our good friends at Secretly Canadian hooked us up with a download of a track from the forthcoming Early Day Miners album, Offshore. "Return Of The Native" features vocals by Amber Webber of Black Mountain.

Easily the best thing out of Bloomington, Indiana since John Cougar, Early Day Miners is actually Daniel Lanois protégé Daniel Burton, and a select cast of fine players, including Matt Griffin of OIO.

Offshore is described as "equally beautiful and noisy...composed though loose; akin to late 80s/early 90s 4AD-laden world of shoegaze wash-rock like Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine, Mark Hollis, their predecessor Peter Gabriel or modern day saint William Basinski." Sounds good to me.

Album out 22 August.

P.M. Dawn Playing Maxwell's In August

Coinciding with the release of their new album P.M. Dawn Loves You, the amazing P.M. Dawn will be playing Maxwells on Wednesday, 2 August (tickets).

I've got a soft spot for these Jersey homies, as they've always seemed to have the same pop/soul/rock/r&b mash-up of tastes as my own (they've worked with both Elton John AND White Zombie, for cryin' out loud), not to mention the fact that they've produced some of the defining tunes of my own life.

Is there a prettier ballad than "I'd Die Without You"? Are there groovier popsongs than "Set Adrift On Memory Bliss"? I'm not so sure.

Anyway, they tore it up on last year's comeback-a-thon "Hit Me One More Time" on NBC, taking Puddle of Mudd's sketchy "Blurry" and totally turning it into a P.M. Dawn jam. Based on that appearance alone, they'll get my ten bucks at the door in Hoboken.

New Scritti Politti Album Gets U.S. Release

This is a nice surprise...just found out that the new Scritti Politti album, White Bread Black Beer is scheduled to get an American release on 25 July!

From the Nonesuch Records website:

Green Gartside is back, having been away, once again, for some time. Back with his first album in seven years, back on Rough Trade after 24 (Nonesuch/Rough Trade in North America), back on stage after 26. The man who is Scritti Politti has always been inclined to absence more than presence, questions more than answers, contradictions he spends years happily lost in. His is a story, after all, that begins watching the Sex Pistols in Leeds in 1977; continues for a period in early 80s Camden squat land, where attempts at a pop commune produced Peel-loved, post-punk singles; made a daring break into pop with the deathless “The ‘Sweetest’ Girl”; moved to New York to become a full-fledged MTV star, and sonic inspiration to future R&B; almost went mad from the effort; retreated to Wales and returned making hip-hop; and now, aged 50, has produced one more intricate, self-questioning pop master class, White Bread Black Beer, recorded alone, in his Hackney back room.

album review: PUFFY AMIYUMI "Splurge"

Is it possible to have a Cartoon Network series about you and still be taken seriously as legitimate rockers? Puffy AmiYumi are taking that dare this Summer with the release of their fifth U.S. album, Splurge, out on Tofu Records in a few weeks.

If you only know Puffy from your kids' TiVo menu, you'd think that they were a brightly colored product of an anime cartoonist's imagination. Fact is, they've been around as musicians for ten years, formed as sort of an anti-J-pop group, and way more Ramones than Pink Lady.

Splurge is fourteen tracks of totally fun punky-pop chock full of hooks, guitars, and bouncy groove, most of which would sound right at home on Indie or Top-40 radio, if either format actually existed anymore. Collaborations from Jon Spencer (Blues Explosion), Dexter Holland (the Offspring), Butch Walker, and long-time cohort Andy Strumer (Jellyfish) give the album just enough American flair to warrant chart success on both sides of the Pacific.

The U.S. version also contains an additional two remixes of "Puffy classics", U-ichi's FICKLE remix of "Friends Forever" and Tofu labelmates POLYSICS' mix of "Teen Titans Theme".

I can tell you from first hand experience that Puffy live is well worth the door fee. The girls are used to playing arenas in Japan, so when they play smaller rooms over here, it's like getting hit with a super dose of "Rock Show". Their band is crazy tight and seriously rockin', and the crowds here are a great mix of hipsters, Japanese fangirls & boys, and skeptical scenesters, all of whom end up pogoing like it's 1979 three or four songs into the set. You will not be disappointed.
