I caught up with Mohair this evening, as they played the third installment of their five night residency at the world's greatest record store, Vintage Vinyl in Central Jersey.
Hailing from Watford, but spending their autumn based in NJ as they spread their brand of rollicking rock throughout the Northeast, these guys made major waves in the British press and the blogworld here a few days ago, based upon their hook-up with The Killers and subsequent boozy set featuring both bands at Rockwood Music Hall last week.
Playing practically a full set before a small but enthusiastic crowd at the back of the record store, Mohair treated the room to a performance played as if it were a packed club in the city. Their songs are infectious roadhouse rock crossed with Brit-pop spunk, but spiced with perfectly placed harmonies and really sweet interplay between charismatic singer Tom Billington's grandiose guitar and Alex Richards' big Hammond keys.
Lazy comparisons will mention Kaiser Chiefs, The Zutons, and The Coral, but truth be told...Mohair have a sound all their own.
To top it off, they are a bunch of terribly nice fellas.
On my way out to my car after the show, a guy also leaving the store turned to me and said, "Those guys are the bollocks, mate". I have to say, I agree.
Catch them while they are in the area...and still playing places not called "The Something Enormodome" and "Whatever Stadium":
