Sammy from The Mooney Suzuki...Diggin' Gnarls, Wolfmother, The Pierces, & Sees Gwen Stefani as "Outsider Art"

2006 appears to have been a very cool year for Sammy James Junior of The Mooney Suzuki, and quite a set-up for '07 as well...the band re-released the notorious Black EP as Maximum Black, which includes five bonus tracks from the original session, and they also spent September out on Little Steven's Underground Garage tour.

Sammy also played a handful of dates with MS bandmate Graham Tyler as "The Patchwork Family", and toured Europe with Albert Hammond, Jr...the Dude gets around.

Finally, the band has completed their first full album for their new label, V2, which is expected out early in the new year.

Before setting sail for the wilds of Hoboken, where The Mooney Suzuki play Friday night (22 Dec) at Maxwell's (tickets here), Sammy sent us his year-end review:

1. What was your favorite song of 2006?

i'd say "crazy" but i'll save that for best album since i really dig the entire album. i don't know, i liked that matisyahu song "king without a crown"... i liked the killers' stab at a "bruce" song... "you only live once" is one of the best strokes songs yet... it was nice to hear a new "who" song... just as good as anything on quadrophenia i thought... actually, right now i am totally into gwen stefani's "wind it up"... it is so out there i cannot stop listening to it, it's like outsider art...

2. What was your favorite album of 2006?

that gnarls barkley album is fun and inventive all the whole way through. that wolfmother album is all great stuff too - dave sardy knocking it out of the park again...

3. What was your favorite live show of 2006?

Albert Hammond Jnr and the Pierces. I've toured or played with everyone in Albert's band before and they are all hot-shit players, one of them was actually in Mooney for a while. I liked the Pierces so much i wanted to play in the band, so i played bass on their recent tour with Albert. that was a great live show - Albert's band "brings it" and it's cool to see him as a frontman...and the Pierces sisters are a phenomenon - and i got to be half a rhythm session with one of the greatest living drummers, russell simins...

4. What was your favorite thing about 2006?

lots of stuff: making a new record with the original mooney suzuki line-up, touring with the zombies, being on a record label as cool as v2, touring uk with albert and the pierces, borat...

5. What is your biggest wish for 2007?

Complete Transcendence into Pure Rock'n'Roll Energy...

See The Mooney Suzuki perform live in the studio on Fox's Feerless Music, airing in NYC this Saturday Night at 1am on Fox 5.
