Gogol Bordello In 3D! Possibly For Free!

One of the highlights of 2009 for me was the All Points West Festival in Jersey City, and one of the highlights of that festival was the amazing set there by Gogol Bordello. Imagine my surprise when I learned that the entire set was filmed and is being released this Friday to theatres in 3D!

It's part of “LARGER THAN LIFE…IN 3D", a concert film triple header also featuring sets by the Dave Matthews Band at Austin City Limits and Ben Harper at the Mile High Festival in Denver. According to the film's press:

"Shot in Digital 3D--which renders a cinema quality comparable to that found in this fall’s other big 3D releases (A Christmas Carol and Avatar)--the format essentially brings viewers onstage, giving them a stunning 360◦ view of each live performance."

The film will be in theatres for one week only (Dec 11-17), and is playing country wide. More info on places and tickets can be found at: http://www.inconcert3d.com/

I'm a sucker for a good pop song.

Seriously, as long as the hooks are huge and the lyrics dance off the singer's tongue, I'm in.

And show me an album loaded with good pop songs? There's a good chance it'll stay in my player for weeks. Case in point is the new album from Toronto's Matthew Barber, "Ghost Notes".

Barber's a pretty great lyricist, but the music really shines as well on this album, which is split between rock stompers, folky pop, and piano-driven slower songs, all of which are catchy as hell.

Must musicians can't pull off the rock/folk split-personality thing well. Many have tried and failed, but the few who do it well are legendary...Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews, Bob Dylan come quickly to mind. Not to say that Matthew Barber belongs to that lofty group just yet, but "Ghost Notes" would certainly not be out of place in a stack of that gang's CD's, next to the backyard boombox, waiting to be spun on a lazy weekend afternoon.

Having said that, I'm very interested in hearing Barber play these songs live. Thankfully, he's out on the road for a few dates, and is giving New Yorkers a couple chances to check him out:

The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach New Album, Unofficial Video, and Vinyl Giveaway

One of the best surprises of the new year so far has been the excellent new album from The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach, Keep It Hid.

Although it's chock full of that fuzzy blues (bluesy fuzz?) guitar he's best known for with The 'Keys, Keep It Hid also features some surprising departures from that signature sound.

To help you understand just how cool this album is, here's a video of Dan and his uncle, James Quine, playing "Trouble Weighs a Ton," the first track on Keep It Hid, in Dan’s Akron studio. It’s not an official video, just a little peek inside Dan’s studio, where he recently recorded Jessica Lea Mayfield’s record and the record for the band Hacienda, who will be Dan’s backing band on his upcoming tour:

"Control" and "Joy Division" Documentary Out On DVD...Win Them Here!

A couple weeks ago, someone asked me at a party if I'd seen any great films lately. I thought about it for a second, and replied that my favorite films this year were both about Joy Division. I happen to be a huge Joy Division & New Order fan, but I feel that Control, Anton Corjbin's dramatic profile of Joy Division's late and enigmatic singer Ian Curtis, and Joy Division, the remarkably insightful documentary directed by Grant Gee, are easily the most entertaining and compelling movies I've seen recently.

I've always considered myself a Joy Division expert and completist, and I was amazed at how much info these films contained that I never knew. Further, I'm told by folks who'd know that much of the insight in Joy Division provided by Peter Hook, Bernard Summer, and Stephen Morris had never been revealed publicly before.

Because of my love for these movies, and because I love collecting rock-docs to watch at home, I'm thrilled that both of these films are being released here in the States next month on DVD, and both with extra features.

extrawack! contest Wong Kar-Wai's "My Blueberry Nights" with Norah Jones

I've been a huge Wong Kar-Wai fan ever since Quentin Tarantino helped get Wong's Chungking Express released here in the States in the late '90's. Wong has an incredible knack for taking scenes of everyday life and turning them into colorful, emotional spectacles.

Chungking Express was notable for Wong's decision to use Canotonese pop-star Faye Wong in the title role to much success. For Wong's new movie, My Blueberry Nights, he's taken a similar chance by using Norah Jones in her acting debut.

In a review of My Blueberry Nights’ debut as the Opening Night Film of the 60th Cannes Film Festival in May, The Hollywood Reporter praised Jones’ performance, declaring it "an auspicious acting debut...The glue here is Jones, who holds a wispy, wistful film together with a deeply felt, unselfconscious performance that strikes the right notes without ever falling into repetition or banality. She brings her singer's talent of knowing when to go for emotions and when to hold back to her acting. It's a remarkably assured work."

Naturally, I'm psyched to see this one. And the soundtrack sounds pretty excellent as well. From the press release:

On April 1, 2008, Blue Note Records will release My Blueberry Nights, music from the new motion picture by director Wong Kar Wai (2046, In The Mood For Love, Happy Together). The first-ever English film by the internationally acclaimed director, My Blueberry Nights is a romantic drama set as an American road movie starring Norah Jones in her acting debut, along with a stellar cast featuring Jude Law, David Strathairn, Rachel Weisz and Natalie Portman. The Weinstein Company will release My Blueberry Nights in U.S. theaters on April 4, 2008.

The soundtrack album is an impressive collection that stands on its own apart from the film. It features a wide swath of American music both new and old that touches upon R&B, Soul, Rock, Folk and Jazz, including "The Story," a new song by Norah Jones based on her experience in the film, as well as music by Cat Power, Otis Redding, Ruth Brown, Mavis Staples, Amos Lee, Cassandra Wilson, and instrumental selections from the score by Ry Cooder.

Wong is no stranger to using American music in his films (consider his prominent use of The Mamas and The Papas' "California Dreamin'" in 1994's Chungking Express), typically setting a classic American song against a Hong Kong backdrop, a jarring technique that beautifully expressed his character’s isolation or longing. The opposite is true of My Blueberry Nights, with the music going hand-in-hand with the setting and perfectly capturing the landscapes and emotions. Most of the songs on the soundtrack are rooted in various American musical styles including R&B, Soul, Rock, Folk and Jazz, and they all reflect upon love and loss from different perspectives, whether it be Cassandra Wilson’s spacious, dreamy take on Neil Young's "Harvest Moon," Mavis Staples' driving rendition of the traditional "Eyes on the Prize" (which was produced by Ry Cooder), or Cat Power’s sweet sad updating of Memphis soul on "Living Proof" and "The Greatest" (Chan Marshall also makes a cameo appearance in the film).

Amos Lee’s soulful "Skipping Stone" acknowledges the hurt of heartbreak ("I don’t know if I can do this alone / After all our sweet love has flown"), but almost seems to be reassuring Elizabeth’s character that "Lovers will come / Lovers will go."
Two classics-Otis Redding’s soaring "Try A Little Tenderness" and Ruth Brown’s regretful "Looking Back"-perfectly complement the heart-wrenching story set in Memphis of a lost love between an alcoholic cop who desperately struggles to hold on to his estranged wife despite her cold determination to begin a new life for herself.

The musical glue of the film and soundtrack album, however, are the instrumental selections from the score by Ry Cooder (Paris, Texas, Buena Vista Social Club), roots rock miniatures that convey the spaciousness and moodiness of the film. Three of Cooder’s instrumentals appear on the album-"Ely Nevada," "Long Ride" and "Busride"-as well as a lovely instrumental piece by Oscar-winning Argentinean composer Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain, Babel) entitled "Pajaros."

Daft Punk Is Playing In My Zune, In My Zune...Alive 2007 Poster Giveaway

The GoStation - download & album contest

One of our favorite albums of recent months has been The GoStation's Passion Before Function. It's chock full of anthemic rock songs that sound big in a good way, and not overblown. I've seen these guys play around NYC a bit, and sure enough, they sounded best in the biggest room I saw them in, at Avalon.

Produced by Bill Racine (Rogue Wave, Flaming Lips), who has a way with opening up a band's sound, Passion Before Function is perfect for fans of loud, catchy, and well-written rock. The lead-off track, "All Together Now" is the best Oasis song not by Oasis this year. I mean that as a compliment.

The answer is Lord Don't Slow Me Down (Big Brother/Hip-O/UMe), a double DVD set that not only gives you the definitive feature length documentary seen in selected cinemas last year, but also the option of voice over commentaries from the band, a Noel Gallagher Q & A session with fans from New York City, out takes from the film, and a second 90 minute bonus disc capturing the band's homecoming show at the City of Manchester Stadium together with footage sent in by fans from around the world who attended that show. If you wanted to know what the members of Oasis make of their lives on tour and their audience, then the answers are on these two discs.

Directed by Baillie Walsh who has previously worked with Massive Attack (he made 'Safe From Harm'), Spiritualized, New Order and Kylie's Slow, and is now working on a film with Daniel Craig, this DVD set is a compendium of Oasis entertainment par excellence.

Disc One:
-Feature length documentary tour film 'Lord Don't Slow Me Down' in stereo and surround sound.
-Bonus audio commentary - Noel, Liam, Andy and Gem guide you through the film with their recollections of the tour.
- A Noel Gallagher Q&A session with fans runs alongside out-takes from the film.
Bonus Disc:
-Oasis live at City of Manchester Stadium on 2nd July 2005 - sixteen classic tracks shot in HD with stereo and surround sound.
-Bonus Disc also features unique footage and pictures sent in by fans who attended the concert.

Lord Don't Slow Me Down will be released on November 6, 2007.

HBO's Flight Of The Conchords Clips & Contest

The last time we saw the Lower East Side on television with any regularity (other than news reports about rambunctious late night club-goers waking up the neighborhood) was that terrible show with the guy from Ed and Brandon Walsh from Beverly Hills 90210. Starting next month, HBO's giving the LES another chance to show off its narrow streets and rising drink prices with Flight of the Conchords, a new show about some broke musicians who move from New Zealand to Downtown NYC.

Here's how the PR notes describe the show:
The Flight of the Conchords is a folk/pop/comedy duo composed of Bret McKenzie of The Black Seeds and Figwit fame and Jemaine Clement of The Humourbeasts. Billing themselves as "New Zealand's fourth most popular folk-parody duo", the group depends upon a combination of witty banter and acoustic guitars to work the audience.

The clips I've seen look pretty promising, and WAY better than the show with Ed & Priestley mentioned above.
