Somebody Send Me Some Sleep, Please...Greetings from SXSW

Even the pizza joints down here are hardcore this time of year:

Hope to check in a few times over the next couple days...but 83F and sunny means that I don't plan on staying inside a whole lot!

DirecTV SXSW Live Line-up Announced...Von Bondies, Echo and The Bunnymen, Ed Harcourt, and more

One of the more interesting events that goes down every year at SXSW are the DirecTV tapings of their SXSW Live series, which are full performance sets by a great roster of industry upstarts and old favorites.  The shows are taped in two different ballrooms in the Austin Convention Center, which are transformed into roadhouse-styled soundstages, and the performances are broadcast throughout the following year on DirecTV's channel 101.

Last year I caught fantastic sets there from Darryl Hall, Nicole Atkins, and a surprisingly great Hanson.

The line-up for this year's tapings have just been announced:

THURSDAY, MARCH 19
TIME                    ARTIST                                                  VENUE
6:00pm The Von Bondies,                                 The Bat Bar

7:00pm The Oak Ridge Boys                              The Lonestar Lounge

8:00pm The Airborne Toxic Event,                        The Bat Bar

FRIDAY, MARCH 20
TIME       ARTIST                                                  VENUE
1:00pm Juliette Lewis and the New Romantiques,  The Bat Bar

2:00pm The Proclaimers,                                     The Lonestar Lounge

4:00pm Lenka,                                                   The Lonestar Lounge

5:00pm Ben Harper and Relentless 7,                    The Bat Bar

6:00pm Third Eye Blind,                                      The Lonestar Lounge

8:00pm Shiny Toy Guns,                                     The Bat Bar

9:00pm Carlene Carter,                                       The Lonestar Lounge

10:00pm Solange Presents:
Sol-Angel and the Hadley Street Dreams,      The Bat Bar

SATURDAY, MARCH 21
TIME      ARTIST                                                  VENUE

5:00pm Echo and the Bunnymen,                        The Bat Bar

6:00pm Ed Harcourt,                                           The Lonestar Lounge

8:00pm TBA ,                                                   The Bat Bar

9:00pm Shwayze,                                               The Lonestar Lounge

10:00pm Tinted Windows,                                     The Bat Bar

If it's run the same way as years past, a limited number of free tickets for all shows are available in the lobby of the convention center, and if I remember correctly, SXSW badges or wristbands are not required.

I'll definitely be checking out Juliette Lewis' new band, possibly Third Eye Blind (because I've always wanted to sing the doot-doot-doot's in "Semi-Charmed Life out loud in public), and best of all, I'll get to see what Ian McCulloch of Echo & The Bunnymen looks like in daylight hours.

For those of you not making it to Austin, here's the schedule of the first airings of these shows:

SXSW LIVE Broadcast Schedule (eastern standard time)

Friday - March 20th

Devo to Play SXSW

From the SXSW website:

On Friday, March 20, performing right society BMI will partner with SXSW to present new wave progenitors Devo at Austin Music Hall (208 Nueces St). The show marks the climax of BMI's focused presence at SXSW 2009: Throughout the week, the organization will also stage indie rock showcases, orchestrate film and songwriter panels, and host its annual invitation-only mixers, the details of which will be announced soon.

In addition, Devo will follow up their Friday performance with a Saturday, March 21 interview at the Austin Convention Center as part of the SXSW Music Conference. Those seeking The Truth About De-Evolution are advised to attend.

Devo's thorough understanding of the ability of precise, multi-faceted artistic expression to relay relevant social commentary elevated the band from quirky cult icons to mainstream players in the late 70's and 80's. Co-founders Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh dubbed the band "Devo," shorthand for their wry philosophy of the "de-evolution" of humanity they most readily observed in cultural shortcomings of the United States.

And here's a ridiculous video of Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale of Devo (under the pseudonyms "Spud & Bud Devo") backing up Jermaine Jackson on a TV show hosted by Fred Travelena from back in the day:

sxsw highlight: Goes Cube @ the Donewaiting.com Party

One of my favorite parties at SXSW was the Donewaiting.com shindig at the Creekside Lounge. Set in the backyard of a, well, creek-side lounge, Donewaiting's event felt more like a kegger than a showcase, and was much more in the spirit of the original SXSW concept than the usual big corporate branding fests that are the norm these days.

The afternoon weather there was perfect, in fact it the best day temperature-wise all week. My running-buddy Jinners and I rolled in, were served chilly and gratis PBR tall-boys, and we sat back to watch Brooklyn's excellent Goes Cube rip through a short set of the loud riffage that makes them one of The BK's most-likely-to-blow-up bands of the next year. Donewaiting honcho Robert Duffy was a gracious host, and hopefully the success of his party will inspire more laid-back affairs next year.

SXSW Highlights - Kate Nash & Billy Bragg @ Filter Courtyard

I've been asked a bunch of times since I've returned from Austin what my favorite set of the week was, and I'm pretty sure it was Kate Nash's Filter Courtyard finale that entertained me the most.

I've never seen her live before, and she struck me as charming, smart, and very talented. And to top it all off, she sang one of my favorite songs ever, Billy Bragg's "A New England"...with Billy Bragg.

I found a clip of most of that performance on YouTube. It sounded WAY better than this clip (posted below) would lead you to believe.

And speaking of the Filter Courtyard, I want to thank the good folks at Filter for feeding me everyday...I seriously think I could live on that BBQ beef and iced tea if I had to.

The Choir Practice, Vancougar to Play Mint Showcase @ SXSW

I've heard some cool stuff about Vancouver's The Choir Practice, whose label bio suggests they "recall the beautiful harmonies of '60s Psych-folk sensations The Free Design combined with the unique song presentation of The Langley Schools Music Project". What's not to like about that description?

So naturally I was chuffed to find out they are playing Mint Records' showcase at SXSW next week:

...And I just wanna see Vancougar because there name is awesome.

SXSW Parties We Are Looking Forward To

This year there are more excellent non-official SXSW parties than ever before. Unless you intend to hit a seminar or panel, or schmooze on the Trade Floor, you really can almost see every decent band down there gratis during the day.

Here's a few free shows we're shooting to hit:

Yeah, you read right, The Wedding Present. For free. At dinner time. Awesome.

And dig Terrorbird & Force Field's boss bash...they even put a beer bottle in the flyer to get the point across:

I'm desperate to hear what These New Puritans sound like live, so I'm so there.

These New Puritans - "Elvis" mp3

And my favorite daytime venue last year, Filter's Cedar Street Courtyard, has another great slate of shows lined-up, PLUS gratis BBQ, blackjack tables (!!), and daily broadcasts by the best host on radio (terrestrial or satellite), Sex Pistol Steve Jones of Indie 103's "Jonesy's Jukebox":

Wanna see me bounce like it's Max's Kansas City in 1977? Be at the Courtyard for the Switches set.

Switches - "Drama Queen" mp3

And in case we were going to be picky about what free beer we'd be drinking down there, The Tripwire today posted their guide to the best of what to drink in Austin.

Peter Morén signs to Quarterstick (Bjorn & John unavailable for comment)

Great news about our fave PB&J member:

From the press release:

On April 8, 2008, Quarterstick Records will release the highlyanticipated solo album from Peter Morén, the lead singer of Swedish indie megastars Peter Bjorn and John.

The Last Tycoon may be Peter’s first solo album, but it has beenseveral years in the making. Throughout the hectic years of songwriting, recording and touring with Peter Bjorn and John in support of their infectious breakout album, Writer’s Block, Peter never rested. What emerged from that period is an intimate 10-track collection of delicateand introspective songs from one of the most promising young storytellers of the decade.

Recorded and mixed over two years in tiny apartments and rehearsalstudios in Sweden and the U.S., The Last Tycoon is built around the basic foundation of Peter and his guitar. The album has a distinctly homemade feel that feeds from the folk singer-songwriter tradition but still incorporates strings, synthesizers, vibraphones, percussion, amusical saw, and even a drum machine or two.

Peter will be bringing his charming folk-pop to the South by Southwest Festival in March and a handful of select cities this spring.

Nice.

Over 500 Bands Confirmed For SXSW

I'm lucky enough that my job will take me to SXSW again this year, and now that the flights and rooms are all booked, I thought I'd poke around the Internets to see what the band rumors look like two months out.

Austinist and Done Waiting usually do pretty good jobs of keeping track of what's happening down there, but the Club Kingsnake site has over 500 bands listed as confirmed! Here's the list as they show it, with a couple MP3's thrown in by us for good measure:

SXSW stuff: Buzzcocks

Despite the fact that SXSW is almost exclusively about discovering new bands, there were a few old-school artists down there showing the whipper-snappers how it should be done...case in point were the mighty Buzzcocks. In existence since 1975, these oldsters quite literally showed up at the Snocap Tent Party, plugged in, and ripped through an amazingly high-energy set of classics and newer songs, putting most of the sixty or so bands playing at that same moment within a twenty block radius to shame.

Here's how they looked to me from the pit (which like the stage, was populated by an older than most group for SXSW):

And here's a bit of the performance from my shaky-cam:

SXSW stuff: Dirty on Purpose

I have an admission to make...with over 1300+ bands playing during SXSW, I actually saw Dirty on Purpose two times. I've loved their Hallelujah Sirens for months & months, but their live show is something else altogether. I can't get enough of their fuzzy swirly poppy rock noise all loud and raw in a club. They totally didn't dissapoint in Austin.

Here's how they looked at the Beauty Bar:

and at Maggie Maes (note DJ's badass The Big Sleep shirt):

New Yorkers will get a chance to catch them again on home turf, as they cap their current tour with a soon to sell-out date at Bowery Ballroom (Saturday, April 14th) on a bill also featuring Calla and The Sugar Report (tickets here).

Check out DoP's recently released video for "Car No Driver", shot in that crazy rock-n-roll capitol, Boyertown, Pennsylvania, home of Blue's Clues host Steve Burns and Elaine Irwin Cougar Mellencamp:

SXSW Stuff: Nicole Atkins

One of the best sets I saw at SXSW was from Nicole Atkins (whom we reviewed a little while back) at the Industry Of Music/Oxfam America party. Her voice is absolutely amazing live, and her band, The Sea, suit her songs perfectly. She's one of those artists that can totally capture a crowd and keep them hypnotized for the full length of her set.

Here's how she looked there:

She also played an earlier, well-received show with Jersey's The Parlor Mob subbing for The Sea, who were snowbound in Brooklyn and couldn't get to Austin in time for that gig. Gothamist has video of them doing Leadbelly's "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", and a cool short interview video as well.

Her full length album hits the streets on June 26th...it would be great to see this very cool chick breakout and get the national exposure and success she deserves.
